HP LASERJET 5P / 5MP PRINTER - INFRARED PORT HARDWARE / SOFTWARE SUPPORT
INFORMATION
INFRAFED (IR) PORT GENERAL INFORMATION
ISSUE: What is Infrared technology?
SOLUTION: Hewlett-Packard, in partnership with other key industry
leaders, founded the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) in
June of 1993 to address and provide industry standard
infrared operation between different brands and types of
infrared devices.
Convenient and time saving, infrared printing requires no
printer cables. The infrared port is one of four "active"
communication ports on the HP LaserJet 5P / 5MP printer.
Complying with the new IrDA specification for infrared
communications, HP positions itself as the first printer
vendor to address the growing needs of the mobile
professional with "point and shoot, walk-up printing."
ISSUE: What hardware and software do you need to use the HP
LaserJet 5P / 5MP printer IR port?
SOLUTION: In order to use the HP LaserJet 5P / 5MP printer IR port,
you need the following:
1. PC or laptop with an IrDA-compliant infrared port
2. IrDA printing function software
ISSUE: How do you know if the PC or laptop is IrDA-compliant?
SOLUTION: Following (List A) is a list of products currently available
that are IrDA-compliant. This list is only a list of those
devices known by Hewlett-Packard to be IrDA-compliant.
There may be other hardware devices that are compliant but
are not on this list. If your device is not on this list,
contact your manufacturer for more details.

ISSUE: How do you obtain the necessary IrDA printing function
software?
SOLUTION: Contact your hardware manufacturer first to determine what
software they provide and support with their IrDA-compliant
device. HP recommends using whatever software your hardware
manufacturer provides. List B below provides names of
manufacturers who provide both hardware and software
solutions for infrared printing.
If your hardware manufacturer cannot provide you with
printing function software, HP will provide, free of charge
(except for shipping), software for use with your IrDA
compatible device for DOS and Windows 3.1 only. This
software is called JetEye and can be obtained from the HP
Distribution center (303-339-7009) or the HP BBS (208-344-
1691). JetEye is a third party software program that is
being provided by HP as a service for users who have no
other alternative for printing function software. Hewlett-
Packard will only provide support for the installation and
setup of JetEye software and cannot support other issues or
problems with your hardware device. JetEye is only a
solution for DOS and Windows 3.1 or 3.11 environments.
ISSUE: How do you obtain the necessary IrDA printing function
software for Windows 95?
SOLUTION: As of November 7, 1995, all newly manufactured PC's with
Windows 95 on board will already contain IrDA printing
software. Contact Microsoft for more information on how to
use this software. All others can download Windows 95 IrDA
printing function software from the Microsoft Windows
Internet home page at http://www. microsoft.com/windows and
other online services. Microsoft also provides Release Notes
for the driver in these areas. All questions on how to use
or install this software should be directed to Microsoft.
If you have an OmniBook 600CT or 4000C you must also obtain
and install a special serial driver in addition to the
Microsoft Windows 95 Infrared driver. This driver, along
with instructions on how to install it, is available from
HP's Internet site in the Mobile Computing section (filename
ob_irda.exe).
ISSUE: What if the computer is not on List A above and you would
like to take advantage of the HP LaserJet 5P/5MP printer
infrared port?
SOLUTION: There are a number of possible hardware and software
infrared solutions available that are listed below (List B).
Contact the vendor listed for more information about
hardware and software solutions.

ISSUE: Where is the IR port located?
SOLUTION: The infrared (IR) port on your HP LaserJet 5P or 5MP printer
is located on the lower front left corner of the printer.
Just above the port is a status light that indicates when
the port is activated.
ISSUE: How does the IR port work?
SOLUTION: The IR port works by transmitting data similarly to a serial
port, but without a cable and operating at speeds of up to
115 Kb (kilobits) per second. When the IR connection is
established, the status light comes on. If the connection
is broken or when the print job is complete, the status
light goes off.
ISSUE: How do you find out more information on the IrDA standard?

ISSUE: How do you print using the IR Port?
SOLUTION: Use the following steps to print using the IR Port:
NOTE: Before you can print you need to obtain the
appropriate printing function software (as
described above) and have the COM port
properly configured for printing from your PC
IR port.
1. Make sure the printer is in Ready Mode (the Ready light
is on).
2. Align your laptop computer (or other portable
equipment) that is equipped with an IrDA-compliant IR
port within 2-3 feet ( 1 m) of the IR port on the printer
and at an angle of +/-15 degrees.
3. Send the print job. The status light above the IR
port turns on (printing a complex document or using a
software print spooler on your PC may delay the time it
takes for the IR status light to turn on). If the status
light does not turn on, realign the port on your portable
equipment with the port on the printer, resend the print
job and stay within the range of operation during
printing (see step 2).
4. If you have to move the device, for example, to add
paper, make sure you stay within the range of operation
to maintain the connection. If the connection is
interrupted before your print job is complete, the IR
port status light will turn off. You have from 3 to 40
seconds to correct the interruption and continue the job.
In this case, the IR port status light turns back on.
5. The connection can be permanently broken (interrupted for
more than 3 to 40 seconds) if the "sending" IR port is
moved out of the range of operation or if anything
passes between the two ports to block the transmission,
such as a hand or piece of paper, or even direct
sunlight. In this case, the job needs to be reprinted.
If you still have problems printing, make sure you are
using an IrDA-compliant device and proper software and
have selected the proper port for printing.
NOTE: The IrDA standard for infrared communications
represents an emerging technology. Older
non-IrDA-compliant portable devices may not
be compatible with your HP LaserJet 5P / 5MP
printer. If you continue to have problems
printing using the IR port, contact the
manufacturer or dealer where you purchased
your portable device to verify compatibility
with the IrDA standard.
TROUBLESHOOTING IR PROBLEMS
Use the following steps to help troubleshoot any printing problems you
may have when using the IR port:
1. Attempt to print from the DOS prompt. Type DIR>COMX at your DOS
prompt. (where X is the number of the COM port your computer's IR
port is attached to). If the IR port is properly configured, a
directory should print. If not, continue with the troubleshooting
steps below.
2. Does the host have an internal IR port? (Locate host/product on List
A, IrDA Matrix or contact manufacturer)
If YES, proceed to step 3.
If NO, an external solution is needed for IrDA communications. See
IrDA vendor List B. Contact your hardware manufacturer for more
information.
3. Is the IR port IrDA compliant or compatible? Look for the IrDA logo
and in product documentation. (Locate host product on List A, IrDA
Matrix.)
If YES, (host is listed as IrDA compliant) proceed to step 4.
If NOT IrDA compliant, or not located on matrix, have the user
contact the host manufacturer for IrDA compatibility requirements.
4. Can you successfully perform file transfer operations between
computers?
If YES, proceed to step 5.
If NO, contact the PC host support line for troubleshooting the
host.
5. Does the host have IrDA printing function software installed (or
upgraded)?
If YES, proceed to step 6.
If NO, refer to the IrDA matrix List B for printing function
software upgrades. If none listed have the user contact the host
support line for printing function software upgrade details. If no
software can be obtained through your hardware manufacturer, try
using the JetEye software distributed by Hewlett-Packard.
6. Are you trying to print using a platform other than Windows 3.X, or
DOS?
If YES or unsure, contact the application support line for IrDA
compatible driver software.
If NO, (using Windows 3.X, or DOS without special drivers) proceed
to step 7.
7. Check for proper operational conditions.
Check the following items and correct them:
* IR window (lens) is clean and unobstructed
* Host position is directly in front of the printer (+/- 15 degrees)
* Host to printer distance is less than one meter (3 ft). [move host
closer to printer and retry the operation]
* Printer/host is operating near a window with bright daylight
conditions (high ambient light)
* Other IR devices (non IrDA compliant) operating in the surrounding
area (may cause IR blindness or signal distortion)
8. Determine whether the host IR port is properly configured for
printing. Contact the manufacturer of your software for help with
this question. If using JetEye software provided by Hewlett-Packard,
go through the following steps:
a. Turn on Print Manager in the Windows CONTROL PANEL, PRINTERS dialog
box
b. Turn OFF "Fast Printing Direct to Port" in the Windows CONTROL
PANEL, PRINTERS, CONNECT dialog box (WIN.INI file should have a
line in the Windows section that reads: "DosPrint = Yes" if this
has been done)
c. Verify CONFIG.SYS file has been modified for JetEye software:
Check for the following line in the CONFIG.SYS file:
Device = C:\irjeteye.sys com#
where # = 1, 2, 3, or 4
Also, use the Microsoft r Diagnostics program (MSD) to see if the
JetEye TSR is actually loading. (At the DOS prompt, type MSD to get
into the program.) Look for the line IRJETEYE in the TSR section.
NOTE: The following troubleshooting steps rely on
the Microsoft Diagnostics program to report
accurate settings for the Port, IRQ# and COM
Port address. MSD may NOT always be
accurate. If in any doubt, customers should
contact their hardware manufacturer for
information regarding the values for these
parameters.
d. Resolve any port conflicts and check to see if JetEye is properly
configured for the Port, IRQ# and COM Port Address. Use the
Windows MSD program to do this. MSD will tell you what the proper
hardware settings are. If you are unsure as to whether or not the
JetEye software is using the proper COM Port Address, IRQ, and
Port, reinstall the JetEye software and choose "CUSTOM" as the
installation method. This allows you to input the proper Port,
IRQ, and COM Port Address as reported in the MSD program. The
device line after doing a "CUSTOM" installation might look like
this:
Device = C:\irjeteye.sys com1 irq4 addr3f8
IMPORTANT: The settings in this line should match
those provided by the computer hardware
manufacturer. The setting may be obtained
from the COM port in MSD but this may not be
accurate.
If the IR light on the HP LaserJet 5P / 5MP printer goes on but the
data light on the printer does not, then there may be a possible
IRQ conflict. If using COM3, reinstall JetEye software and switch
to IRQ 10 or another IRQ number that is available.
e. Remove any other TSR programs that are using the same COM port as
JetEye. Determining if any other TSR programs are using the same
COM port as JetEye is a trial and error process.
f. If long jobs begin and then suddenly quit, set EJT (end of job
timeout) to 45 seconds (up from default of 10 seconds) by adding
EJT45 to the end of the DEVICE= line in Config.sys.
Example:
Device = C:\irjeteye.sys com1 irq4 addr3f8 ejt45
g. Try communicating to other printers and hosts using your IrDA
compliant device to narrow any additional the problem down to a
single source.

to the readme file that comes with the
software.
